Requesting a medical leave or a reduced course load.

Requesting a medical leave or a reduced course load.

Maintaining your F1 status when you are unable to attend classes.

If you experience a medical emergency lasting over 2 weeks, you may request a Reduced course load (reduce hours of attendance) or a no course load (a break from studies). You will need to bring medical documentation from a licensed medical doctor or clinical psychologist no later than 20 days from your first absence to request DSO approval.

Please note that if your request for RCL is not adequate to your needs, the DSO may instead authorize a temporary absence so you can go back home to seek medical treatment.  If your doctor’s notice is less than 2 weeks, we will mark you sick/absent and keep your doctor’s note on file. If you wish to extend your RCL (Reduced Course Load), please send us an updated doctor’s notice before your RCL expires.
