Your immigration responsibilities as an F1 student

What you need to know in order to maintain your F1 student status

As an international student in the U.S., you must understand the requirements to maintain your F1 status. The Study in the States website outlines the main F1 student responsibilities as:

  1. Arrive in the U.S. up to 30 days prior to the starting date on your I-20;
  2. Report to the school as soon as you arrive in the U.S;
  3. Register as a full-time student (minimum of 18 hours per week without labs);
  4. Attend and pass your classes;
  5. Complete your program by the ending date on your I-20 or request an I-20 extension;
  6. Request authorization from the DSO/ International Student advisor prior to stopping classes for any reason;
